News - 4 Easy Steps to Kill Blog Spam Forever

Helpero

Currently there are 3 main types of blog spam:

* Comment Spam
* TrackBack Spam
* Contact Form Spam

Comment Spam

1. Akismet (this is the best anti spam plugin you can ever get).
After installing the Akismet plug-in for WordPress or one of the third party Akismet implementations, you will need an API key to activate and use Akismet.

You can get a free API key by registering for a WordPress.com user account. The API key will be emailed to you after you register.

Download and Install Instructions can be found here.

2. Math Comment Spam Protection Plugin
This plugin for Wordpress 1.5.2, 2.0.x and 2.1 asks the visitor making the comment to answer a simple math question. This is intended to prove that the visitor is a human being and not a spam robot.

Example of such question:

Download and Install Instructions can be found here.

Trackback Spam:

3. Simple Trackback Validation Plugin
It eliminates spam trackbacks by retrieving the web page located at the URL used in the trackback and checking if the page contains a link to your blog: if not, the trackback is placed into comment moderation queue.

Download and Install Instructions can be found here.

Contact Form Spam:
4. Enhanced WordPress contactform
This Plugin is an enhancement of wp-contactform plugin and it adds:
* the referring page on the site;
* the original referrer to the mailform (whether that was another website or a search engine);
* the keywords used if it was a search engine.

Download and Install Instructions can be found here.

If you install this 4 plugins I guarantee you that you'll spend more time posting than deleting spam messages.

What about non-automated comment spam? ;-)

What is the big deal.The blog spam gives a flavor to the blog.

If you run Word Press then Akismet is a must. Since installing this on my blog ALL spam is caught and saves me loads of time.I also use the Math plugin which must protect the site from loads of automated comments.

Thanks for these!

hey man your post already has a spam entry dude

I find that adding a simple captcha (there are some wordpress plugins) eliminates all spam instantly. Aksimet is cool, but I'm always worried that amongst the 5000 captured spam-messages which I never bother to check, there's actually a cool commenter whose insights I missed.

Aksimet is notoriously unreliable and often blocks legit comments. And how long before software designers figure out a way to get around it?

As an alternative to Askimet (which I've used and found it fallible) try the excellent Bad Behaviour

Vee says: 04:49 / 10 mar 2007
I used Akismet and math comment spam protection. I also used IP deny manager. This tool is included in my hosting package.http://www.veesite.com/2007/02/26/ip-addresses-being-blocked-by-veesitecom/

An advert for robbie williams just turned up near the picture of the spam burger, must be bidding on the word "spam" or something :)

xxdesmus says: 06:39 / 10 mar 2007
What about Bad Behavior v2?

is good to know this...

where is the Math Comment Spam Protection Plugin on your website?

David Russell says: 10:07 / 10 mar 2007
What about non-Wordpress blog spam? Oh, wait, Textpattern doesn't need plugins to stop spam.

Here's an awesome tip: don't use trackbacks! People will link to your page, and you can use Google or your search engine of choice to find out who links to your page. Also, hidden form elements are a good way to detect a lot of spam bots. Also, allowing compliant e-mail addresses is kind of important (foo bar@example.com is in fact a valid e-mail address).

Excellent post, is it artistic to have a more than one spam blocker. Anyway I find the akimet spam blocker to be the most effeciently personally.
