Currently, if you ask a person, either a beginner in computers or a more advanced one which is their favourite music player you will get a unanimity answer:
Winamp. This is the reason why I didn't made this article ' Winamp vs. Something' because it's so popular and so easy to use that it has no real competition. And I will demonstrate my affirmation below.
Testing will be done by quality of playing, how easy is to use it, cost of the product, memory usage and 'bugs'.
Memory usage:
Well Winamp 5.xx comes with 2 main skins, the classic skin and the modern skin and you can switch between them very easy. The classic skin when it comes to memory usage is a true king using very little resources and I don't think you can argue about that can you?
The other skin, the modern one is for faster computers eating significantly more memory and is really not recommended for slower computers, but it looks much better, has graphical effects and is very well polished.
Easy to use:
Winamp is made out of three parts: the main Winamp window which shows the song you are playing, his length and sound volume plus some shuffle and repeat options, the equalizer window, from which you can adjust sound effects and even boost Winamp's power and the Winamp playlist window where you can arrange your music, add new songs, remove them, make a personalized playlist, arrange them by name, path, filename or reverse them.
In the above windows there are only the buttons which are frequently used, the rest are accessible by right clicking on a Winamp window.
The main options are in the 'Preferences' menu which can be accessed by pressing Ctrl+P and this way we get to another feature that brings us joy, Winamp can be accessed only from buttons shortcuts which is great isn't it?
Bored of how your Winamp player looks? You can change his skin and there are hundreds of skins out there that can easily be implemented.
Quality of sound:
Here too Winamp does a great job, the sound is very good, fast change between tracks no stops, freezes or annoying things like that. You can play in 'direct sound' or in 'wave output' both functioning very good.
You can play wave files, mp3 files, mp2, Cd, Mod and others, even play video files.
Bugs: Winamp had some bugs too but in the latest 5.xx versions the bugs number was reduced almost to zero.
When playing a file using direct sound you can get a small 5 second audio kick back when changing to a different song but this happens only in the 5.02 version and it was fixed. I specified this bug because it was very annoying.
Cost of the product:
Winamp strikes again and makes us happy as the product is absolutely free, so no comment here.
After reading the above I think you can agree with me that Winamp has no real competition, though I think some of you didn't had to read this article to find that out.
Needless to say that
