Scientists in
Britain invented a solution,
Ion-Mask, for
making electronic gadgets waterproof using a type of coating that repels liquids.
The new technology has been
used by military until now, but the inventors of
Ion-Mask are already in discussion with three mobile phone manufacturers to use the coating on their products.
Ion-Mask is a protective layer that bonds to the device using
plasma, and its chemical properties allow oil and water to be repelled easily.
Originally developed for
treating soldiers' uniforms to repel toxic vapors and liquids in chemical or biological attacks, the technology will be now used to protect gadgets such as
mobile phones and
MP3 players.
Phones treated with Ion Mask will be protected from
moisture,
rain and
accidental immersion.
"Mobile phones and MP3 players are too small to be fitted with seals to make them waterproof, so water inevitably can creep in" explained a development director. "By making the surface repel water, we have been able to take devices that fail the normal... shower tests, and make them pass."
From statistics we know that more than
1.2 mobiles were lost in 2006 to
toilets,
drinks and
washing machines.
"Most owners are looking for
fashion and
functionality when they buy a phone, but if it was waterproof too, it could provide a
unique selling point." (spokesman for
