Google has launched a free
Wi-Fi network in Mountain View, California.
The majority of the people living there will be able to access the network for free and pretty fast.
The company announced that eventually the whole city will be covered and it will be a testing ground for future technologies.
The Wi-Fi network was finished in June and then entered in the testing phase in July. The feedback from the users was so good in the first weeks that Google chose to grant general access to the network.
Unlike other Wi-Fi networks announced in the United States, the Google service is totally free. Google didn't say anything about the bandwidth of the network but it announced that it will grant support for the 'Google Secure Access', a client which uses an encrypted connection to replace the standard Wi-Fi network which is unencrypted.
The new network from Google utilizes the Mesh technology which allows a wireless gadget to connect to a router network installed in the city. The signal is routed through the network to Google from where the Internet connection is granted. Users that will want to connect to the wireless network will have to make a Google account to login, this way preventing spamming.
We look forward for new projects from Google, they all seem to be good.
